Albania’s Missing Children investigates the disappearance of hundreds of Albanian Roma children from a state-run care home in Athens. Rounded up from the streets of Greece in the years before the 2004 Olympic Games, many were placed in the Agia Varvara institution — only to vanish without proper explanation.
The film traces a disturbing story of poverty, trafficking, state neglect and failed accountability, asking how so many vulnerable children could disappear from official care, and why the truth remains unresolved for one of Europe’s poorest and most marginalised communities.
Made by Sarah MacDonald, Eki Rrahmani and David Niblock, the documentary is a powerful investigation into a scandal that exposed the vulnerability of children who were meant to be protected.
