The Road to Damascus is a compelling documentary reconstructing the final days of the Assad regime through rare access to command rooms, front lines, and newly liberated areas. Filmed by Syrians who were themselves shaped by the country’s long struggle for freedom, the documentary follows rebel forces from the moment they leave Idlib to their advance towards Damascus. Their exclusive footage offers a unique insight into the military operations that led to the fall of Bashar al-Assad, 14 years after Syrians first took to the streets demanding an end to his rule.
Led on the ground by Syrian filmmaker Ibrahim AlShamaly, and produced by renowned Syrian producer Maher Jamous alongside Eki Rrahmani, the film is also a deeply personal act of witness. The team brings years of experience covering front lines in Syria, the wider Middle East, and the Balkans, but their relationship to this story goes beyond professional reporting. In different ways, they are all products of the wars and struggles they have documented — filmmakers whose lives, memories, and craft have been shaped by conflict, survival, and the search for freedom.
