Searching for Sanctuary follows two young Syrians, Dirar Khattab and Milad Georges, as they flee the war in Syria and attempt to reach safety in Germany. Like millions displaced by the conflict, they place their lives in the hands of smugglers, boarding a tiny boat across the eastern Mediterranean before beginning a long and uncertain overland journey through Europe.
Across two episodes, the film captures one of the defining human stories of our age: the search for refuge, dignity and a future beyond war. Dirar and Milad’s journey becomes a wider portrait of displacement — of fear, loss, endurance and the fragile hope that somewhere ahead, life might begin again.
After the pair have spent a year living in Germany, producers Maher Jamous and Eki Rrahmani return to visit them and see, at close range, how they are rebuilding their lives as migrants in a new country. Searching for Sanctuary is both a refugee journey and a follow-up story about what happens after arrival — when survival gives way to the harder, quieter struggle of belonging.
