Imran Khan: Run Out? is a political documentary about Pakistan’s deepening democratic crisis, told through the rise, fall and imprisonment of former prime minister Imran Khan. The film explores Khan’s confrontation with Pakistan’s powerful establishment, the mobilisation of his PTI movement, and the allegations, court battles and crackdowns that have reshaped the country’s political landscape.
The film draws on a long-standing People & Power relationship with Khan. In 2010, filmmaker Karim Shah filmed him describing his movement as a “tsunami” that would sweep Pakistan. More than a decade later, Khan had reached power, lost it, survived an assassination attempt and faced prison, while his party fought to remain a force in national politics.
Imran Khan: Run Out? became the fastest People & Power film to reach one million views and was one of the most watched Al Jazeera English films online that year, with more than two million views.
Made by an award-winning team led by BAFTA- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Karim Shah, alongside Shad Khan, and co-produced and edited by award-winning filmmaker Eki Rrahmani, Imran Khan: Run Out? continues the long-running collaboration between Shah and Rrahmani, marking their sixth film together. It asks whether Khan’s movement has truly been “run out”, or whether it remains capable of reshaping Pakistan’s future.
