SYRIA: JOBAR

Syria: Jobar Part 2

Once a peaceful, bustling suburb of Damascus rich with centuries of history, Jobar was transformed into an apocalyptic frontline following the 2011 Syrian uprising. By the summer of 2017, years of brutal bombardment had left the district unrecognisable—a shattered wasteland evoking the tragic ghosts of Guernica and Stalingrad. Yet, beneath the ruins, 200 resilient families refused to flee, defiantly holding out against a massive offensive by the regime of Bashar Al-Assad.
Filmed over several months from deep inside the besieged enclave by Maher Abu Alkhair and Ammar Sulaiman, and produced by exiled Syrian filmmaker Maher Jamous alongside Eki Rrahmani, this gripping documentary embeds with Jobar’s remaining residents. It explores the harrowing survival, regular lives turned extraordinary, and the unbreakable spirit of ordinary people who chose to stay and guard the remnants of their home against impossible odds.
